Why does the raven say ‘Nevermore’?
In The Philosophy of Composition, Poe describes choosing a refrain for its sound and melancholy effect. A raven can repeat the word without understanding it; the grieving speaker supplies increasingly painful questions. The refrain stays fixed while its meaning changes.
Where was The Cask of Amontillado first printed?
The tale appeared in the November 1846 issue of Godey’s Magazine and Lady’s Book. Its opening announces Montresor’s grievance but offers no independent account of Fortunato’s supposed insult. Reading the first printing puts that unreliable voice back in its original magazine setting.
Did Poe see Annabel Lee published?
Poe died on October 7, 1849. Annabel Lee appeared in print on October 9, in the New-York Daily Tribune obituary signed ‘Ludwig,’ the pseudonym of Rufus Griswold. The poem’s publication history therefore begins alongside an account of its author’s death.
