Where was The Cask of Amontillado first printed?

The Cask of Amontillado appeared in the November 1846 issue of Godey’s Magazine and Lady’s Book, on pages 216–218. Crypt of Echoes preserves the issue and identifies the tale’s three pages separately from the complete magazine scan. The issue date belongs to the publication; it is not a date supplied for the events Montresor describes.

Reading that printing allows a reader to distinguish the historical text from later retellings, illustrations, and modern summaries. Montresor announces injuries and an insult at the beginning, but the story does not give an independent account of what Fortunato supposedly did. That limitation is part of the narrative, rather than a gap an editor should fill with an invented explanation.

The Asylum’s companion article discusses the first printing and connects it to the preserved source. Use the magazine images for questions about original wording, typography, and placement. A transcription is a reading aid; when a spelling or punctuation detail matters, compare it with the scan and identify which edition you are quoting.
